Thee regional director, Mel Silva, said, “If this version of the code were to become law, it would give us no real choice but to stop making Google Search available in Australia.”According to an official blogpost by Google, “Right now, no website or search engine pays to connect people to other sites through links. This law would change that, making Google pay to provide links for the first time in our history. If the law requires Google to pay to link people to websites, it’s a slippery slope. After all, if one type of business gets paid for appearing in Search, why shouldn’t others? Going down that route would destroy the business model of any search engine, Google included. And if a search engine has to pay to show links, what’s to stop links elsewhere coming with a price tag, too?” Responding to the same, Prime Minister Scott Morrison pushed back saying he won’t respond to “threats”. Even the Council of Small Business Organisations Australia says Google needs “strong and stringent” regulation because of its monopoly on searching the web. What will happen if there is no Google in Australia?

Google is not just web search. Google’s parent company Alphabet Inc. runs otherkey web portals, including YouTube, as well as Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs and Google Maps. Google’s key competitive advantage is the ability to access data from people using its search services. Pulling web search out from the Australian market would mean Google missing out on that data from people in Australia. If there is no Google in Australia, it automatically would mean that the above services will be removed from the Australian market, even if web search does get pulled out. Google’s proposal to make Google Search unavailable in Australia means we would need to search the web using other systems and tools. If this really happens, Australians will not be able to use google.com and google.com.au to search the web. It is also important to note that online advertising is another sector in which Google is the market leader and where it makes money. If there is no Google in Australia, then it will be difficult for businesses to advertise using Google’s services. Also, with no Google Search here, those adverts would no longer appear ahead of any other search results and be visited by Australian users.
