Back in 2021, the tech giant came out with Real Tone for Pixel. However, this time it has been expanded to a variety of Google products. During the announcement, Google said that the company is introducing these filters as a part of their commitment to image equity and improve representation across their products. The Real Tone Filters are announced in partnership with Harvard professor and sociologist Dr Ellis Monk. On 24th May, Google Photos tweeted that these filters were designed by professional image-makers. They wanted it to work well across skin tones so that one can choose the filter that reflects his/her style. Also, as per the tweet, the filters have already started to roll out for Android, iOS, and Web.
Google also released Monk Skin Tone Scale at I/O
Monk Skin Tone Scale or MST is a 10-shade tone scale that is said to be a culmination of Dr Monk’s research into the area. These tones can be tried on machine learning models for various kinds of computer vision projects. As per Google, the MST scale is being used to figure out how well machine learning models can detect people’s faces within images, across skin tones. The company is not rolling out filters for Google Photos, but also it releasing enhanced support for skin tones through Google search. Whenever a user will search for images, for instance, “party makeup looks”, Google search will show all the tone options on that particular search automatically. These new features and filters sound interesting. Do share your experience with us once you try these.
