The railways ministry has planned to install a hi-tech internet based VSS at 756 railway stations across the country. This will include 26 railway stations of North Central Railways (NCR) as well. As per railway officials, this action will eb completed by January 2023. The Railway Board wish to equip 6,049 railway stations in total across the county with hi-tech VSS in phases. And for this, the board will get funds from the Nirbhaya Fund of the Union Government. RailTel Corporation, which is one of the biggest neutral telecom infrastructure providers in India, has been assigned with this work. In addition to this, RailTel has already finalised the agency that would execute the installation of VSS. 756 major stations of category A1, A, B, C would be covered in the first phase. Whereas all those remaining stations would be covered in phase 2 for the passengers’ security and safety.
All about hi-tech VSS
Video surveillance system would be at some of the major points of the stations which includes, reservation counters, waiting halls, main entrance, exit platforms, booking offices, foot over bridges, etc., says RailTel senior manager Sucharita Pradhan. The VSS system will be IP-based and will consist of CCTV cameras that would be connected via optical fibre cable. This video feed will then be displayed at a centralized CCTV control room along with local RPF posts. Interestingly, to ensure enhanced security and safety, the video feeds would be monitored at three different levels. The system will have an artificial intelligence enabled video analytics software along with a facial recognition software. This will trigger an alert if in case any criminal enters the railway station. People can view the recording from this CCTV cameras of up to 30 days.
